Jockey sweats it out twice

Roger Lang spent two sessions in a steaming sauna yesterday, to lose three kilograms, then on to Randwick and won the $100,500 Metropolitan. An AJC official must feel like biting his tongue whenever Lang wins a big race. When the heavily-built Lang applied for his jockey’s licence, the official quipped: “Do you have elephant races over there [New Zealand]?” “Yes,we do, but we bring our elephants over here to win your rich staying races,” Lang retorted.

Bee swarm delays flight

Bees swarming over an air cargo container at Sydney Airport delayed a Thai International flight to Paris for 20 minutes yesterday. Airline officials declined Health department inspectors offer to spray the 900 kilo container of ordinary cargo and went in search of someone who knew how to handle bees. It took only 10 minutes to find a bee expert – a mechanic working on the tarmac. He moved the queen bee to a post about 20 feet away.

Jurors get $3.50 more a day

Jurors’ fees will increase from $13 to $16.50 a day, retrospective to October 1, the NSW Attorney-General, Mr Walker, announced yesterday. This will be the first stage in a series of increases, intended to provide jurors with the equivalent of the average minimum weekly wage. The government also want to widen the area of responsibility for jury service. This will severely limit the present range of people exempt for jury service, including housewives.
