Dominic Perrottet backed by Gladys Berjejiklian as former NSW premier takes in floral tribute

Former premier Gladys Berejiklian says her successor Dominic Perrottet will be an “outstanding leader” and has urged the people of NSW to support the new leadership as the state emerges from lockdown.

Arriving at her Willoughby electorate office on Wednesday morning, Ms Berejiklian took time to observe the floral tributes laid across the entrance to the building.

“I just want to say thank you to everybody for the support they’ve shown me, it’s very comforting,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“I just want everybody to know that I’m going to read every single card and every single message.”

Ms Berejiklian, who resigned on Friday after the Independent Commission Against Corruption confirmed it would hold public hearings to investigate her conduct while in office, said she was feeling “OK” since stepping down.

“I just want everybody to get behind the new Premier Perrottet and the NSW government during this important time,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“He will be an outstanding leader and at this important time we need everybody to follow the premier’s words and make sure we come out of this lockdown as safely as possible.”

The ICAC said it was looking into whether Ms Berejiklian allowed or encouraged corrupt conduct by her former long-term boyfriend, disgraced former Liberal MP Daryl Maguire.

At the centre of the investigation is $5.5 million the government awarded the Australian Clay Target Association and $30 million for the Riverina Conservatorium of Music, both in Mr Maguire’s former seat of Wagga Wagga.
