Eddie Obeid arrives in prison

Former Labor MP Eddie Obeid has arrived at Silverwater’s Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre to begin his sentence for his role in a crooked coal deal.

The 77-year-old was on Thursday sentenced to three years and 10 months behind bars over his role in a conspiracy that involved then-mining minister Ian Macdonald committing acts of misconduct benefiting the Obeid family, who received $30 million.

He was sensationally granted bail on Thursday after his lawyers flagged concerns about him contracting COVID and dying at the Surry Hills police station, spending Friday night at the family’s Hunters Hill home.

He will “certainly” maintaining his innocence, a supporter of Obeid’s told reporters outside the prison on Saturday morning.

“Obviously it is,” the supporter said, when asked if it was a confronting day for Obeid.

Wearing a disposable face mask, Obeid left his family home in Hunters Hill just after 9am on Saturday in a white Land Rover Discovery as news choppers hovered over head.

Family arrived at the home on Saturday morning, dispersing as the former Labor powerbroker left.

More to come.
